Week 3- Number Sense and Numeration
Number Sense and Numeration!
Addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, the roots of math. Both last week and this week we have started really diving into math and how it can always be solved more than one way. As we were discussing strategies for completing the addition and subtraction problems, I saw a lot of relation to the textbook readings for this week. Already having background information about the principles of each operation allowed me to fully understand them in class and apply them during our activities. I felt the most confident in my skills during the addition and subtraction activities. The multiplication and division on the other hand were a bit more challenging. I remember learning both operations in a traditional manner and didn't really have the opportunity to use visuals or manipulatives. It was reassuring that other classmates were also confused but through explanation and practice it became clearer. Also working in groups helped me see varying perspectives and how we can all choose a different starting point and reach the same answer. Especially for math I think it is super important to ensure students understand problems can be solved differently and that they know how to do that. As educators, math can be a tough subject for a lot of kids and teaching them to see and understand that solutions can arise in different ways can allow them to feel more confident in their practice. I personally felt more comfortable after seeing other groups results, and I hope to ensure this safety and confidence in my own classroom in terms of feeling good about your responses and solutions.
The learning activity was also very fun. It related directly to what we were doing in lecture (operations) and sort of tested my knowledge as a student but also as a future educator. It allowed me to try out potential problem's students may have to complete and seek out how I could adapt an activity to suit students in a fun way. With math I find doing multiple examples can help me further understand and obviously practice. This video shows some continued examples regarding order of operations (see below). Khan Academy is a favourite channel of mind to get main ideas about subjects through videos. In terms of the assignments we have coming up, I have been working on my Problem-Solving Activity, the Game Forum, as well as my Learning Activity. I enjoyed the game forum thus far because it is fun to see how games can help students understand better and gain more practice. This also relates to another course where we talked about implemented gamification into the classroom. In terms of the learning activity assignment I found it difficult to find an engaging game that truly interested me and that as a student I would want to try out. I'm hoping my activity goes well and if my other classmates enjoy it, I’m sure kids will too! I’m eager to continue with the forums, observe my volunteers for the problem-solving activity and begin to dive into the lesson plan activity. Thankfully I’m enjoying Math thus far!
